Linking Nutrition and Dental Health
Proper nutrition is important to your body’s overall health, and that includes your teeth and gums. We all learn that too much sugar can increase the risk of tooth decay, but there’s more to the story. A number of nutrients help keep your mouth healthier by helping to protect it from infection and disease. Lack of proper nutrition has been linked to increased risk of oral cancer, enamel defects and gum disease. For example, Vitamin A helps in tooth formation and the complex of B vitamins help in a wide range of ways to keep your teeth, gums and tongue functioning properly.
To maintain proper nutrition, The American Dental Association promotes using the dietary guidelines from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Eating certain foods can also be beneficial specifically for teeth and gums. However, our busy lives often leave us a little short in meeting all the dietary guidelines. That is where supplements may be helpful.
